François van der Hoeven has been the Secretary of the Foundation for Maritime Archaeology Curaçao (STIMACUR) since 2000. He also volunteers as an amateur archaeologist at the National Archaeological Anthropological Memory Management (NAAM) on the island.
His background is in geography, having obtained a Master degree in Social Geography at the Free Reformed University in Amsterdam and working for many years as a geography teacher in Curaçao, the Netherlands and Sint Maarten.
In 2016, Substation Curaçao, went on a special mission to explore the underwater world around Dominica with the Curaçao owned, based and operated Research Submarine (CURASUB) and submarine tender RV Chapman. The Foundation for Maritime Archeology Curaçao (STIMACUR) was invited to join the expedition. François van der Hoeven will go into this and other explorations in his talk ‘The use of the Curaçao research submarine for Caribbean maritime archaeology’.
